NFL Betting Preview: Chicago Bears vs. Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions will host the Chicago Bears for a Thursday Night NFC North matchup at Ford Field. The Bears are coming off an ugly loss to the Ravens 16-13, while the Lions fell just short to the Browns 13-10. Both of these teams have trended in the wrong direction, with the Bears losing five straight, while the Lions are still searching for their first win. Let’s dive into these two teams and see how they match up.

Chicago Bears Betting Preview: Bears Looking to Snap Five-Game Losing Streak

What happened to the Bears? Over their last five games, the Bears have given a whopping 28 points per game, while scoring just 15.8 points. Everyone knew the Bears might start out a little slow with a rookie quarterback; however, no one expected the Bears to be this bad, and Chicago fans are calling for head coach Matt Nagy to be fired.

Despite the slow start, Justin Fields has gained more and more experience and has looked better and better. Fields have done it with his arm and his legs over the last several games, and it brought another dynamic to this offense that makes them dangerous. Be that as it may, the offense has been one of the worst in the league, ranking second to last in total yards (287.9) and could be without Fields, who left last game with a rib injury.

The defensive side of the ball is the clear strength of this team. The defense has kept the Bears competitive in their games, for the most part, this season. Overall, Chicago comes into this matchup ranked 12th in total defense, including ranking 10th against the pass. The Bears held the Ravens to 219 yards passing and one interception last week and should have a favorable matchup against an ugly Detroit offense.

Detroit Lions Betting Preview: Lions Looking for First Win of the Season

The Detroit Lions have lost some tough games this year, and they have been scratching and clawing to try and get their first win of 2021. It hasn’t been an easy go-around for the Lions this year; Detroit has lost five of those games by one possession of their ten games so far. To make things worse, they’ve lost two games this year on time, expiring field goals.

Be that as it may, make no mistake, this team is bad on both sides of the ball. On the offensive end, the Lions come into this matchup 27th in the league in total offense (312) and 30th in points per game (16). To make matters worse, they were without Jared Goff on Sunday and gave Tim Boyle his first start, in which the quarterback earned a pitiful 77 yards and two interceptions.

Defensively, the Lions rank 29th overall in total defense. Detroit has been particularly bad against the run, allowing 135.7 yards on the ground, including 184 yards to the Browns last Sunday. Even worse, the Lions are conceding an atrocious 28.9 points to opponents. This could be a good opportunity for them to rebound against an ineffective Bears defense.

The Bears come into this matchup having lost five straight; however, the Lions have failed even to win a game this year. The Detroit Lions couldn’t get anything going with a terrible effort from Tim Boyle last week. To Boyle’s credit, the Lions haven’t been getting much offense from Jared Goff in the first place, either. Additionally, the Lions have gotten blown out in their last two games at home, losing to the Bengals 34-11 and to the Eagles 44-6.

The Bears, on the other hand, I think this is a great opportunity for them to bounce back. With their coach on the hot-seat and their backs up against the wall for a playoff spot, I think they can easily win this one. The “Red Rocket,” Andy Dalton didn’t look too bad, relieving Justin Fields, tossing two touchdowns. If Fields can’t go next week, I think the Bears can still take this one on the road.
