NFL Betting Preview 49ers vs. Rams – January 9, 2022

NFC West Rivals face off for what should be an exciting matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams at Sofi Stadium in the final week of the regular season. The matchup will have a notable impact on the postseason, as both teams are fighting for a better position in the playoffs.

The Rams moved to 12-4 after a win last week over the Ravens and can clinch the NFC West with a win, while the 49ers have yet to clinch a playoff berth but could with a win over the Rams or a Saints loss. With this in mind, let’s dive into this matchup.

San Francisco 49ers Betting Preview: Who Will Start at Quarterback for the 49ers?

The 49ers come into this matchup with a question at quarterback with Jimmy Garropolo a game-time decision after a finger injury, but the Niners gave Trey Lance the start, and the rookie led the 49ers to a win over the Texans.

Trey Lance got off to a slow start against the Texans, but the offense heated up in the second half, with Lance finishing with two touchdowns and 249 yards. Despite throwing an interception and being held to just three points at the half, the 49ers responded with 416 total yards, including 175 on the ground. With Lance at quarterback, the offense brings another layer to Kyle Shanahan’s playbook, and that could be enough to keep the Rams off balance.

San Francisco’s defensive line has come alive as of late, with Nick Bosa leading the way with 15 sacks. The defense again came up big last week, picking up three sacks and an interception while holding the Texans to 222 total yards and seven points. The 49ers rank fourth overall in total defense (312.8) and are holding opponents to 21.3 points per game.

Los Angeles Rams Betting Preview: Rams Can Clinch NFC West With Win

Not only will the Rams be playing for the NFC West title on Sunday, but Cooper Kupp will also be trying to etch his name in the NFL record books with the extra week of play. Kupp needs just 11 receptions to break Michael Thomas’ reception record and 135 yards to break Calvin Johnson’s all-time receiving yards record.

Kupp has been outstanding thanks to an offense that is averaging 378.8 yards and 27.3 points per game. Matthew Stafford has been a big part of that success tossing 38 touchdown passes on the year. Be that as it may, the quarterback has struggled big time as of late, tossing six interceptions in his last three games, including his fourth pick-six of the season against the Ravens last week.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Rams had a solid outing last week against Baltimore collecting five sacks on Sunday and allowing just 19 points and 327 yards of offense in the win. Although they faced backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, they were able to pressure him often, limiting him to 162 yards and an interception in the air.

The Rams come into this matchup having won their last five games, including going 4-1 ATS. In addition, with the win, the Rams will clinch the NFC West, so they should bring out every play in the book to take down the 49ers. On the other hand, the 49ers have played just as good, going 6-2 over their last eight games and got a big win over the Rams in week ten 31-10.

That being said, with Jimmy Garropolo questionable headed into this game, I like the Rams to win and cover the spread in this matchup. Despite struggling over the past couple of games, the Rams have the home field advantage, and the defense should have no problem frustrating Trey Lance.
