NCAA Football Betting Preview Georgia Bulldogs vs. Michigan Wolverines – December 31, 2021

The atmosphere is sure to be intense this New Year’s Eve, as Hard Rock Stadium in Miami hosts the Bulldogs and Wolverines for the 2021 edition of the Orange Bowl. Everyone knows what to expect in this game, as both teams will look to establish the run and dominate on the defensive side of the ball, and even though this may not be the highest-scoring game ever, it is nonetheless a very interesting matchup between the two of the elite programs in the country. Even though Georgia lost to Alabama last time out in the SEC championship, they are coming into this game as 7.5 point favorites, and they have been heavily backed at the windows by bettors.

Suppose the Bulldogs are able to get past the Wolverines. In that case, it will set them up with an opportunity to win their first national championship since 1980, so motivation will be extremely high, as you’d expect for a semi-final game. By all rights, the Wolverines should not even be here, as nobody thought they would finish with a number beside their name, let alone make it to the college football playoff, and if they are to make it to the final, they will once again need to shock the world. They do have a formula that could lead to just that as well, as many of the things the Bulldogs do well the Wolverines can match.

Georgia Bulldogs Betting Preview:

The Bulldogs will come into this game with one of the best defenses I can remember seeing, with NFL talent littered across this entire unit. They will make sure the Wolverines cannot run the ball here, and that will be bad news for Michigan because if they send Cade McNamara into too many passing situations, this Georgia pass rush will get home. The secondary is also elite on Georgia, allowing only 172.2 passing yards per game, so it is tough to see Michigan moving the ball a ton. However, Georgia does need to bounce back as they did not look amazing for the first time all season against Alabama. They will once again want to have a big performance not only to reach the final, but to establish themselves once again as the country’s premier defense.

Stetson Bennett did throw two interceptions in his last game against Alabama, but he looked good in that one going for well over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. This offense can really get going in the passing game here, and I believe it will be a big key to victory here, as the Bulldogs just have so many weapons at Bennett’s disposal. Look for Georgia to try and use shorter routes as an extension of the running game and for them to be effective enough to frustrate the wolverines’ defense.

Michigan Wolverines Betting Preview:

You do feel like the Wolverines will need to switch things up a bit, as I find it hard to believe that the Michigan coaches really think they are going to be able to win this game by pounding the rock. They did rush for over 220 yards per game this year, but that Georgia front 7 is just going to be too much for them to handle in all likelihood. That should mean we see a healthy dose of Cade McNamara in this spot, and that might not be the worst thing, as the junior QB was able to put together a respectable season with 2470 passing yards and a 15-4 TD to interception ratio. This will undoubtedly be his biggest challenge to date, but he does have the ability to raise some eyebrows and possibly put the Wolverines in a position to win.

If they are to win this game, Michigan likely gets that done with turnovers from their defense, as it is critical they win the turnover battle in a game like this. Their defense has not been as good as Georgia’s, but they have been ferocious in their own right allowing only 316.2 yards per game. They are quite strong on the back end, so they possibly could get an interception off of Bennett, who has 7 picks on the season.

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Michigan Wolverines Betting Prediction:

It would be easy to go with the Georgia side here and many other bettors, but I wouldn’t say I like the hook we have to lay on that line in a game with such a low total. Even though these are two excellent defenses, I do think this one gets over the 45.5 point total. I think both of these teams will pass more than we think, and I think both sides can have a decent amount of success in that department. The over has been seeing some money later in the week, so I am not completely alone in this prediction, and I would not be surprised if the over continues to get hit, so this one might be worth getting on sooner rather than later.
