NCAA Bowls Betting Preview Miami Redhawks vs. N.Texas Mean Green – December 23, 2021

The Frisco Football Classic is coming up this Thursday between the North Texas Mean Green and the Miami-Ohio Redhawks in what promises to be a competitive game with just a spread of 3. Halfway through the season, few people would have seen this North Texas squad making a bowl game, but here they are after winning their last 5 games on the trot. On the other hand, Miami has been consistently strong all season, so it will be interesting to see whether the surging Mean Green can take their game to yet another level to pick up a big bowl game victory.

Miami Redhawks Betting Preview:

The Miami Redhawks are coming off of an incredible game against Kent State, which ended 48-47 in overtime. Those two teams put up nearly 1100 yards of total offense and really put on a show for the fans. From a handicapping standpoint, it is possible to look at all the offense in that game and be impressed, but playing defense like they did will not earn you many victories at the end of the day.

Brett Gabbert was good, but not great, at the QB spot for Miami in that game against Kent State, throwing for 405 yards and 4 TDs. The problem, however, was the efficiency, as he only completed 51% of his passes and ended up with 2 crucial interceptions. His season stats do not really say he is a turnover machine with only 6 picks this year, but the most worrying thing is the low completion percentage sitting at 58.2% for the season.

This Redhawks team does not exactly have an elite running game either, so most of the onus for this offense will fall on the shoulders of Gabbert and his number one receiver Jack Sorenson who has been awesome this season with 1290 receiving yards. He should be involved early and often in this one, as both an extension to the running game and being used on higher A-dot targets downfield.

North Texas Mean Green Betting Preview:

There is plenty to like about the Mean Green coming into this game and even more to like when we just look back at that last game against UTSA. North Texas went into that last game as 8.5 point underdogs, and they absolutely put it on the Roadrunners, beating them by a final score of 45-23, and if they come with a similar performance, they will once again win this game in a rout.

The Mean Green did benefit from some timely turnovers in that one, but they did play some solid defense at the end of the day, holding UTSA to 366 total yards, which is not something we have been able to say about the Mean Green many times this season.

QB Austin Aune is not amazing, but he is not asked to be amazing in this offense, and he will give this team a great chance to win this Thursday by simply not turning the ball over.  After his last performance, I certainly expect Ikaika Ragsdale to get another 20 touches at a minimum in this one at the RB position. Ragsdale was the reason the Mean Green won that last game with 146 rushing yards and 2 TD’s, and it is not tough to see him having yet another big game with a questionable defense on the other side of the equation.

Miami Redhawks vs. N.Texas Mean Green Betting Prediction:

There is not a ton of wow when it comes to the QB play on either side, but I do feel like this game does get over the total. I feel that the last defensive performance from the Mean Green was more a result of UTSA simply not showing up instead of them playing incredibly well. The Redhawks almost gave up 50 points in their last game, so they have not exactly been firing on that side of the ball either.

I think we see some turnovers on both sides of the ball, which cause some short fields and effective running games with plenty of big plays off of play-action, which will see this one go over the listed total of 54.5.
