NBA Betting Preview Lakers vs. 76ers January 27, 2022

In the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers’ first inter-conference matchup of the season, MVP candidates LeBron James and Joel Embiid battle it out on Thursday Night. On Tuesday, the Lakers picked up a 106-96 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. Meanwhile, the 76ers took out the Pelicans 117-107.

In a road trip to the Wells Fargo Center, the Lakers aim to keep their winning streak alive against a Sixers club, coming off back-to-back victories over the New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs.

Los Angeles Lakers Betting Preview: Lakers Get Big Boost With Anthony Davis Returning

The Lakers’ big three are finally back on the court together. Anthony Davis returned to the court for Tuesday’s triumph over the Brooklyn Nets, and his numbers aren’t eye-popping. Still, his very existence is a significant psychological win for the Lakers. It’s an even greater win for Russell Westbrook, who should be able to sink into the background a little more behind Davis and LeBron James’ explosive tandem.

Davis returned to the court after a 17-game layoff, finishing with eight points, two rebounds, and two assists in 25 minutes. He did, however, have a game-high four blocks, reinstating one of the finest defenses in the last two years.

LeBron has not been held under 20 points in the last two months. During Davis’ absence, he scored 30 points or more in 13 of the 17 games he played. He scored 30.7 points on 55.5 percent shooting in December, including 40.4 percent from three. In January, he scored 30.3 points on nearly 52 percent shooting.

With the Lakers still allowing points on the defensive end of the court, this might be an issue. This season, opponents are averaging 112.3 points per game against them. While Davis struggles to reacclimate to live basketball, the Lakers’ defensive troubles could continue to be a problem.

Philadelphia 76ers Betting Preview: All About Joel Embiid

As he continues his amazing scoring spree, Joel Embiid is making a case for MVP. On both ends of the hardwood, the man is a sight to behold. He has put together a 40-point performance in three of his last four games, and Philadelphia has been on fire averaging 111 points per game in their last three games.

After going for 50 points and 12 rebounds against the Magic, 40 points and 13 rebounds against the Clippers, and 38 points and 12 rebounds against the Spurs, Embiid somehow didn’t win Eastern Conference player of the week.

Despite this, Embiid continued his hot streak and carried a Ben Simmons-less 76ers with 42 points and 14 rebounds against the Pelicans, and since Christmas, he’s scored at least 30 points in all but one game, a win against Boston in which he put up 25-13-6.

Seth Curry, Danny Green, and Shake Milton are all out for the Sixers. As a result, the focus moving into this game should be on defense. The Lakers could lose another game if Embiid and Tobias Harris can keep Davis, LeBron James, and Russell Westbrook from scoring easy baskets in the front court. The Sixers have a top-10 scoring defense entering this game, and buckets will be difficult to come by in this matchup.

The Lakers have Anthony Davis back, but he won’t be able to save them from the Joel Embiid situation.

In his return against the Brooklyn Nets, he looked as if he hadn’t played live basketball in over a month, grabbing four blocks in the first quarter but finishing with a pedestrian line. On the road, all Embiid has been doing is cooking opponents on the offensive end of the floor, and the 76ers own the best conference record on the road (17-9).

With LeBron James and Russell Westbrook, the Lakers can definitely score points, but they can’t stop the water from flowing on defense. Even worse, they do the majority of their damage inside the arc, and the Sixers, with Embiid and Harris, have one of the best frontcourts in the game. This season, the Lakers have been terrible ATS (20-28) and are 10-17 ATS as a home favorite.
