CBB Betting Preview Kansas State Wildcats vs. Kansas Jayhawks – February 22, 2022

The Sunflower Showdown will take place on Tuesday night at Allen Fieldhouse between the Kansas State Wildcats and the No. 5 Kansas Jayhawks. In this Big 12 Conference game, the Wildcats are 14-12 (6-8) on the season and are coming off an 82-79 overtime away loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday. Meanwhile, after defeating the West Virginia Mountaineers 71-58 on the road Saturday, the Jayhawks are 22-4 (11-2) and on a three-game winning streak.

These in-state rivals are playing at two separate levels, so it should be an entertaining and interesting clash. Let’s take a closer look at the programs to see which direction we should be leaning.

Kansas State Wildcats Betting Preview: Wildcats Look For Revenge on the Road Against Jayhawks

The Wildcats were on the verge of making the NCAA Tournament after a four-game winning streak, but they now have a lot of work to do after losing in overtime to Oklahoma State over the weekend. Marquis Nowell had 16 points and five assists to lead the Wildcats, while Mark Smith added 15 points, ten rebounds, and four assists.

Nijel Pack, a sophomore guard, has been in excellent form, averaging 17.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.4 steals in 33 minutes per game. The pack is shooting 45.2 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from the three-point range, and 83.6 percent from the free-throw line. Pack played 43 minutes against Oklahoma State and ended with 16 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and three steals.

Kansas State has struggled offensively, averaging 68.3 points per game on 46.8% two-point shooting and 34.3 percent three-point shooting. Defensively, the Wildcats are 60th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 65 points per game on 51 percent shooting from two and 27.8 percent from beyond the arc, the third-best perimeter average in college basketball.

Kansas Jayhawks Betting Preview: Jayhawks Go For Season Sweep and Push for No. 1 Seed

The Jayhawks have won five of their previous six games since being thrashed by No. 6 Kentucky on January 29. They avoided a tough road matchup over the weekend by defeating West Virginia.

Ochai Agbaji, a senior guard, led the Jayhawks with 23 points and grabbed three boards to win against West Virginia. Agbaji has been the Kansas Jayhawks’ best player this season, averaging 20 points and 5.1 rebounds. He’s hitting 50.3 percent of his shots from the field, and an impressive 43.7 percent from beyond the arc.

This amazing Kansas offense ranks 24th in college basketball with 79.2 points per game on 56.1 percent shooting from two and 35.5 percent shooting from three, both top 25 marks nationally. Conceding just  67.7 points per game on 48 percent shooting from two and 29.8 percent from beyond the arc, the Jayhawks have the 27th best perimeter mark in college basketball.

On January 22, these two teams played a classic in Manhattan, with the Jayhawks overturning a large hole to win 75-72. Kansas owns a six-game winning streak over the Wildcats and leads the long-running rivalry 202-94 all-time. Despite this, there are many points to give a team in such an intense rivalry, and the Wildcats will be confident they can at least compete with a top 5 Kansas squad after taking them to the brink in their last matchup.

Kansas State can at least keep close in most matchups thanks to a strong defense that has allowed a 47.2 effective field goal percentage thanks to being so dominant on the perimeter. Make no mistake, though, this Kansas offense is legit, and they have an All-American and potential player of the year in Agbaji who can score at will.

Kansas is just 6-7 ATS in conference games and 7-7 ATS at home, while the Wildcats are 7-1 ATS as an away underdog. Back Kansas State in this one.
