NCAA Football Betting Preview Wolverines vs. Nittany Lions

The Michigan Wolverines will be on the hunt for a win this Saturday, as they look to push their overall record to 9-1 and make a late-season push to make the College Football Playoff. Although not even remotely in the conversation for the playoff, Penn State will not make things easy on the Wolverines with the support of the home fans behind them. The bookies essentially have this one as a pick-em, and that makes a lot of sense given the situation that Michigan is walking into.

Michigan Wolverines Betting Preview:

Even though the Michigan Wolverines have been great this season, many fans would put this year down as a failure, as their lone loss has come to their bitter in-state rival, the Michigan State Spartans.

This is a great team, though, and they certainly proved that in their last game against the Indiana Hoosiers, winning that one by a final score of 29-7. Now I know it is just the Hoosiers, and they have been bad this year, but sometimes handicapping games, it is helpful to see how a team won, and the Wolverines really cruised in that one, never looking like they had any chance of losing.

Their defense also stepped up big against Indiana, holding them to just 195 yards, and that will once again be a main theme in this one, with the Wolverines defense being the strong point of this team. They have only given up 298.2 total yards per game this year, and it is not like the Nittany Lions offense is some powerhouse, so I would not be surprised if they step up in a big way once again in this one.

Michigan likes to pair that strong defense with a great running game which has gone well over 200 yards per game during the 2021 campaign, with leading rusher Hassan Haskins looking great with 829 yards and 11 touchdowns up to this point. They also mix in Blake Corum quite well, who has close to the stats of Haskins, so Michigan does not really need to worry about having fresh legs in their backfield.

Cade McNamara will once again have a clear goal in this one, and that is not turning the ball over, which he has done to great effect so far, only throwing two interceptions. If he is able to limit turnovers again, the Wolverines will be in a prime position to pick up yet another big win.

Penn State Nittany Lions Betting Preview:

Penn State started out the season red hot, but has now only won 1 of their last three games and would love nothing more than to throw a wrench into the Wolverines season this coming Saturday. The Nittany Lions last game was a little touch and went for most of the day, but they did manage to get the job done to snap their two-game losing streak.

The most problematic part of that game is that they gave up 371 passing yards to Taulia Tagovailoa. Although Saturday’s opponent does not possess an outstanding passing attack, it is nonetheless still not a good look.

The Wolverines come to town with a very strong front 7, so I think most of the onus for this offense will fall on the shoulders of Sean Clifford, who has been decent this year. He has thrown for 2371 yards and holds a 16-6 TD to INT ratio, and he should be looking for Jahan Dotson early and often here, who exploded for a huge game last time out.

Dotson caught 11 balls from Clifford against Maryland, going for 242 yards and 3 touchdowns, so he is no doubt a guy the Wolverines secondary will make a priority to cover in this one.

Michigan Wolverines vs. Penn State Nittany Lions Betting Lines & Odds

Although I am a little bit worried about taking a road favorite against a decent offense who certainly could move the ball, I have to stick with the more fundamentally sound team, and that is the Wolverines. The Wolverines should be able to move the ball with their running game, which should open up some deep shots and this Michigan defense likely rises to the occasion once again.
