NFL Preview: Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos

In a battle of two playoff teams from a season ago out of the AFC West, the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Denver Broncos on Sunday. This is Week 2 of the National Football League season. The Chiefs are coming off a disappointing loss in Week one, while the Broncos beat the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday Night. Kansas City made the postseason a season ago, but fell in the first round. For Denver, they were able to win the AFC, but then were blitzed in the Super Bowl by the Seattle Seahawks. The Broncos are the lone team that won in Week 1 within the AFC West.

The Denver Broncos are an offensive machine. They are of course led by their play caller Peyton Manning, who has been throwing darts for several years in the NFL. Manning in the season opening win tossed for 269 yards and 3 touchdowns. Manning’s top target in the opener was tight end Julius Thomas, who caught all 3 touchdowns. The running game for Denver can be scary with running back Montee Ball. Ball rushed 23 times for 67 yards and a touchdown in the opener. The Broncos are starting the season at home for two games, before they head out on the road and take on the Seattle Seahawks in a Super Bowl rematch in week 3. Following that, the Broncos take their bye week.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed their quarterback Alex Smith to a long term contract before the season started; then he struggled in the opener. Smith completed just 19 of 35 passes in the loss to the Titans. The Chiefs top target in the passing game Dwyane Bowe was out, which put more stress on Donnie Avery. Avery finished with 84 yards. Charles ran the ball just 7 times for 19 yards, which put a ton of question marks on the offense. Kansas City is playing their first of two straight road games. The Chiefs will head to Miami next week, before coming home to host New England, and then going back on the road at San Francisco. The Chiefs feel if they do not win this game, they could be off to a rough 2014 start.

We feel the number for this game is too high. Sure, we understand that the Kansas City Chiefs were not very good in the opener against the Titans. The Chiefs are going to turn to Jamaal Charles early and often in this one. And, yes, we know the Denver defense is pretty good as well, but they will have a tough time defending the Chiefs run game. While we do not think the Chiefs will win this game outright, we do feel they will stay within single digits throughout the entire game. We are going to bet on the Kansas City Chiefs +11.5 over the Denver Broncos in this AFC West battle on Sunday afternoon.
