NCAA Basketball Betting — Gators Put 16-Game Winning Streak on Line at Kentucky

Much of the early-season hoopla in the SEC surrounded the Kentucky Wildcats and their incredible haul of incoming freshmen. In fact, there were many NCAA basketball betting “experts” who had them pegged for a national championship. Well, Kentucky still has some ground to cover in order to get to that level, but they can demonstrate how many steps they’ve taken on Saturday night when they take on the Florida Gators in a key conference matchup that is scheduled to tip off at 9 PM ET at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY.

Both of these teams are nationally -ranked, as was expected. Kentucky is #13 in the country as far as the USA today coaches poll is concerned, and they are 14th in the Associated Press rankings, which are voted on by writers. Florida is third in the AP poll, and #4 with the coaches. They are certainly targeting a #1 seed when the NCAA Tournament pairings are announced.

In the NCAA basketball betting lines that have been established by the people at BetDSI on this game, Kentucky is laying a small number as the home team:

Kentucky Wildcats -2.5
Florida Gators +2.5

Over 130 points -110
Under 130 points -110

This is a fascinating game on a number of levels, not the least of which is that there is quite a contrast in terms of experience between these two squads. Kentucky seemingly always has first or second-year players in key roles, because they don’t normally stick around in the program long enough to become “veterans.”

On the other hand, Florida, coached by Billy Donovan, brings four seniors into this game who will be playing important roles. One of them, of course, is Patric Young, the big man from Jacksonville who this team is counting on to do much of its business inside the paint. But basketball bettors who look at the Kentucky side can see that its coach, John Calipari, has always done a great job recruiting intimidators whose specialty is keeping people out of the lane.

Remember, he brought DeMarcus Cousins, currently one of the NBA’s best power forwards, to Lexington. Also, Anthony Davis, who leads the NBA in blocked shots and will be playing in the All-Star game on Sunday, was the national player of the year when Kentucky won the NCAA title a couple of seasons ago. And last year, in a campaign that was abbreviated because of a knee injury, Nerlens Noel was leading the country in blocks.

BetDSI customers have another intimidating big man to look at this year with the Wildcats. And he’s not “one and done” player either. Willie Cauley-Stein, a sophomore who replaced Noel after last year’s injury, is swatting away three shots per game, and he’s got support underneath from people like fellow sophomore Alex Poythress and blue-chip freshman Dakari Johnson (a seven-footer). This may be a game where Florida gets pushed to the outside for its scoring opportunities. And that is something for NCAA basketball bettors to consider, since Kentucky has limited opponents to 29.7% from the arc.

There is also no doubt that Donovan will direct his players to put pressure on the ball. One of the key people in that scheme is senior guard Scottie Wilbekin renowned as a defensive stopper the SEC, who will harass Andrew and Aaron Harrison, Kentucky’s two freshman guards. At the same time, Florida certainly wants a more deliberate game than the Wildcats may be used to playing. They will test the patience of this team, and if you look at the totals in the basketball betting lines, you will see that out of 17 games that have been posted on the board, the Gators have gone “under” in thirteen of them. So you know which direction they want to go.

As far as other trends that might be useful in making a sportsbook betting pick on this game at BetDSI, Florida has not lost since December 2, when they fell by a 65-64 score to Connecticut, and they are on a 16-game win streak at the moment. Kentucky has won 22 straight games at home, and has beaten Florida the last six meetings in Lexington.
