NBA Betting Preview: Portland Trailblazers vs. San Antonio Spurs- May 6th, 2014

The San Antonio Spurs were widely expected to be the team to push through the West, take down the Thunder, and win this incredibly tough conference. It’s not going to be quite that easy though, as they were pushed to Game 7 in Round 1 against the Dallas Mavericks, and now they get to play a team in the Portland Trailblazers who just won a huge series against the strong Houston Rockets. The Blazers looked incredibly good as well during this series, and they are going to give the Spurs all they can handle. This series starts out in San Antonio, as they are the one seed, and tip off for Game 1 is set for 9:30pm EST.

The Blazers were nearly pushed to a Game 7 in their series, but it was a fadeaway three pointer from Damian Lillard at the buzzer of Game 6 that pushed them through to the next round. They also got incredibly good play from LaMarcus Aldridge, who really stepped up and led this team by dominating the Houston Rockets during that opening round series. This is a fun, young team to watch, and we can definitely see them going far this year. Anytime a team can score like the Blazers can, who average 106.7 points per game, it’s definitely a tough match-up.

The Spurs on the other hand won a ridiculous 62 games in 2014, and they averaged 105.4 points per game themselves. One big difference between them and the Blazers is that they allow only 97.6 points per game. Their defense is just on another level from the Blazers, so Portland will need to step up the defense if they want to beat the Spurs. San Antonio was also 32-9 this season on their home floor, and that’s where this series will start out tonight.

Offensive Game

While we talked about how strong the Spurs are defensively, they can also score the ball, and I think we see the excitement and momentum of the Blazers help them to score quite a few points as well. I like this game to be a high scoring one, with both teams putting up big points.

I’ve seen the Spurs sitting around -6.5 to -7 on most sports betting sites, but I believe that’s too many points for the Blazers to be getting. This team is too good, and we’ve seen them get it done both on the road and at home so far this postseason, so I’ll be taking the Blazers to cover that spread.
