NBA Betting — Knicks Have Jackson, But Now They Need More Wins

The New York Knicks have already plucked Phil Jackson from right under the noses of the Los Angeles Lakers, and now they need to win more games if they hope to remain in contention for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They will meet up with the Lakers in what might be more of a tense atmosphere than usual as NBA betting action gets underway at 10:35 PM ET at the Staples Center – you remember, the building the Lakers USED to have a firm grip on.

At 23-46, the Lakers are in a battle to avoid having the worst record in the West. They are barely succeeding, as they are a game ahead of the Utah Jazz. The Knicks are coming off a great stretch, where they won eight games in a row to inject themselves back into the picture, but the loss they suffered against Cleveland on Sunday bothers them. They are 29-41 and trail the bumbling Atlanta Hawks by two and a half games for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.

In the NBA betting lines that have been placed on this game at BetDSI, the Knicks are the team laying points on the road, which is an unusual situation for them:

New York Knicks -7.5
Los Angeles Lakers +7.5

Over 217 points -110
Under 217 points -110

When we say this is unusual for the Knicks, they have been a road favorite of 6.5 points or more only twice this season, and they failed to cover in both cases.

But they are in this position because they won eight games in a row before blowing a 17-point lead in a gut-wrenching loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. They have now crept to within 2.5 games of Atlanta, and start off a five-game road trip here.

The Lakers broke a four-game losing streak on Sunday with a win over the Orlando Magic, which not only covered for them against the NBA betting odds, but also was the first time in 30 days that a total on one of their games failed to break the 200-mark. They held the Magic to just 94 points, and that had to make coach Mike D’Antoni feel good.

But Nick Young didn’t feel so good after the game. Young came home afterwards and found that there was over $100,000 worth of items stolen from his house. In L.A.? Come on, are you kidding? Young felt unsafe enough that he checked into a hotel. Perhaps Young should have thought twice before showing off a pair of expensive Nike sneakers in front of reporters last week. That may have been an open invitation.

None of the Knicks were implicated, but the Knicks’ organization was guilty as charged in the robbery of Phil Jackson, who probably would have been willing to take a job with the Lakers, had his future brother-in-law (yes, this is a strange one) Jim Buss, who now controls the Lakers’ fortunes, would have been willing to make room for him. As BetDSI customers know by now, we wasn’t, and so Jackson went off to the Knicks and will be completely in charge of all the basketball decisions.

One of those decisions may involve Carmelo Anthony. Jackson has said time and again that he wants to build the team around Anthony, but the longer he is around this team (and yes, he will be at Staples waiting for them), the more he will realize that Anthony is not Kobe Bryant. But for now, he will settle for the Carmelo who has averaged 33 points over his last three games against the Lakers.
