NBA Betting — Clippers Encounter Potential Trouble Spot in Game with Grizzlies

Two of the teams that have been rather hot in the NBA will meet up on Friday night in a game that has some serious playoff implications.

There are very few teams in the league who are as familiar with the Los Angeles Clippers as the Memphis Grizzlies are, and now, eager for revenge and catching the Clippers coming off a game where they were not at their best, the Grizzlies look to capitalize on such familiarity in NBA betting action that is scheduled to get underway at 8:05 PM ET at the FedEx Forum.

At the moment, the Clippers are 37-19 straight up and in a virtual tie with the Portland Trail Blazers for fourth-place in the Western Conference playoff race.

Against the basketball pointspread Los Angeles is 31-25. They have the opportunity to get into a tie with Houston for the West’s #3 spot with a victory here. Memphis has taken advantage of a very nice run to get to within one game of the eighth and final playoff spot in the West, as they sport a 30-23 straight up mark.

The Grizzlies are 24-28-1 against the basketball odds.

According to the NBA betting lines that have been posted at BetDSI on this game, the Clippers are a slight favorite on the road:

Los Angeles Clippers -1.5
Memphis Grizzlies +1.5

Over 194.5 points -110
Under 194.5 points -110

There have not been many NBA players who have been hotter of late than Blake Griffin, the Clippers’ power forward who has scored at least 25 points in nine straight games. That doesn’t even include his monster effort in the All-Star Game on Sunday, when he made 19 of his 23 field-goal attempts and tallied 38 points.

Well, if there has been one NBA team with a formula to slow Griffin down, it is Memphis, which has held him to 16.5 points over the course of his career, and just 14.3 points per contest going back to the beginning of last season. This includes a playoff series that the Grizzlies won on the way to playing against San Antonio for the Western Conference championship and the right to go to the NBA Finals. In this process, Memphis has been the winner against the NBA odds in six of the last seven meetings.

BetDSI customers are aware that these teams have met two seasons in a row in the playoffs, and so there are virtually no secrets between the two. They represent a contrast in styles, to an extent, as the Clippers, who average almost 107 points per game, like to speed up the tempo, while Memphis is very adept in creating more of a deliberate pace. Over the last 17 games, the Grizzlies have allowed 87.8 points per game, and not coincidentally they have won 13 of those games. It is also no accident that all but three of those contests have gone under the total as it has been posted in the NBA betting lines.

All of this doesn’t necessarily mean that Memphis has been a profitable team; in fact, they have only two pointspread covers to show for their last eight games, and have covered only one of their last seven in basketball betting on their home floor. But the fact remains, they have had success in slowing down the most powerful offensive force the Clippers have (Griffin).

The last time these teams met, on December 5 at the FedEx Forum, Memphis took it on the chin by way of a 101-81 final score, but it wasn’t because Griffin ran wild. Quite the contrary; he was held to five field goals and 14 points. But he had lots of support; the Clippers covered the 1.5-point spread in NBA betting by making eleven three-pointers in 20 attempts and making Memphis go cold, to the tune of 37.7% shooting.

The Clippers will understandably be a little annoyed coming in, as they failed to handle a San Antonio team that was without Tony Parker on Tuesday night, falling by a 113-103 score at home. They let the Spurs hit 50% in that one, and need better defense to prevail here.
