NBA Basketball Odds — Playoff-Hopeful Bobcats Start Grueling Stretch vs. Spurs

The Charlotte Bobcats are a team that was not considered strongly by many NBA basketball bettors, but are quite possibly on their way to participating in the playoffs. They face a critical game, which continues a critical stretch, as they square off against the San Antonio Spurs in a game that is set to get underway at 8:35 PM ET at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

The Spurs are 41-16 straight-up, and because the Oklahoma City Thunder has faltered a bit, are just a game and a half behind them for the #1 spot in the Western Conference. San Antonio hasn’t been a very profitable team against the sportsbook pointspread odds, as they are 27-30 ATS. The Bobcats are 27-30 straight-up, and that is good enough to be sixth in the overall standings in the Eastern Conference, one percentage point ahead of the Brooklyn Nets. Because they have become post-season contenders rather unexpectedly, the ‘Cats have provided some good value against the number, with a pointspread mark of 32-22-3.

In the NBA basketball odds that have been posted on this game by the people at Bookmaker, the Spurs are the favorites:

San Antonio Spurs -8.5
Charlotte Bobcats +8.5

Over 200.5 points -110
Under 200.5 points -110

The Spurs are a team that is remarkably indifferent toward getting to the top spot in the West in the end, and that is a result of coach Gregg Popovich’s priorities, which begin with keeping his veteran players healthy when it comes time to turn it on in the post-season. He is confident that his team, which is 22-8 straight-up on the road, can make up for it if they don’t have the home court advantage in any given series. This would, and should, have some kind of effect on the basketball betting analysis on any particular game, especially one where they are coming to play the second end of back-to-back contests.

That is not the case here. San Antonio has played just once in the last week, and that was two nights ago against the Detroit Pistons, as they scored a 120-110 victory, just failing to cover as a 10.5-point favorite in the NBA basketball odds. They would have done better had they not let the Pistons shoot 50%.

People have been in and out of the lineup for the Spurs, and once again they are without Tony Parker, or so it appears. Parker sat out the game with Detroit, and will be a game-time decision here. One piece of good news for Popovich was that he was able to get back Kawhi Leonard, who had been out for fourteen games with a broken finger and had 15 points against Detroit.

Charlotte has won four consecutive games, and they are now at the point where they can equal the total of wins in their last two seasons combined. Bookmaker customers know that turnovers are a big part of the NBA, and the Bobcats commit fewer turnovers than anyone else. They were able to take care of the ball relatively well (11 TO’s) in their last game, a 92-89 victory over Memphis that took place six nights ago, and that is how they overcame 36.6% shooting to cover as a three-point dog in the NBA basketball odds.

They were able to get by against the Grizzlies, who are capable though not explosive, but that likely won’t do with the list of foes they have upcoming. After tonight’s game, Charlotte proceeds to a game against Oklahoma City, then to a game in Miami against the two-time defending champion Heat and a home date against the East-leading Indiana pacers. This is a series of games against the absolute best in the league over a period of six days.

If they can come out of that alive, they will shown an awful lot to sportsbook bettors and the media as well.

The previous meeting took place on February 8, a 104-100 San Antonio win at the Time Warner Cable Arena in which Patty Mills had 32 points off the bench. If Parker doesn’t play, Mills will be back to haunt the Bobcats again.
