MLB Betting Preview: Seattle Mariners vs. Los Angeles Angels- July 18th, 2014

With the 2014 All-Star break just passed us, it’s time to focus up on the second half of the season. This includes some great games in the first day since the break, and one of those games features the Seattle Mariners heading on the road to take on the Los Angeles Angels. Seattle is looking to get back to the postseason for the first time in 12 years, and they need to win these big series’ in order to get back into the playoffs. As of this moment, the Mariners are eight games behind the AL West leaders in the Athletics, but have a 2.5 game lead for the second Wild Card. The Angels are 1.5 games back of the A’s thanks to a ridiculously impressive 26-9 record since the sixth of June. The Angels and Mariners are both getting some solid hitting from key players, and we’ll see if the hot bats continue tonight at 10:05pm EST.

The Mariners are going to be starting Hisashi Iwakuma, who has an 8-4 record on the season and an impressive 2.98 ERA as well. He ended the first half of the season with a strong run going 3-0 with just a 1.25 ERA. In that final three game stretch he managed to strike out 25 batters and walk a grand total of zero. He has been stellar against the Angels in his career, as he’s gone 5-0 with a 1.49 ERA in seven games, which featured six starts. Iwakuma feels great currently, and is a key to their success from the pitching staff. This is definitely a team to watch moving forward in the 2014 season.

For the Angels, they are going to be pitching Jered Weaver, who has been impressive as well through 2014. So far this year, Weaver has gone 10-6 with a 3.45 ERA. He was slowed up a bit recently due to some lower back tightness, which limited him to pitching just two innings in the start before his last one. He came back solid though against the Rangers, and pitched seven innings and looked good as well. The Angels are hoping that Weaver won’t have anymore setbacks. Through his career to this point he’s gone 14-9 with a 3.30 ERA in 29 starts against the Mariners.

The Mariners and Angels are set for a great series, but I’m going to give the edge in this one to the Mariners. I love how Iwakuma is pitching, and I think he starts out the second half strong. The Mariners are +111 tonight, and I’m taking them as underdogs to get the win.
