MLB Betting Preview: San Francisco Giants vs. Philadelphia Phillies- July 21st, 2014

The San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies are set to get a four game series underway, and it should be an interesting game one of the series. We are going to get to see two teams, one of which is heading in the right direction and wants to keep their second half rolling, while the second team is looking to turn things around quickly. On top of all of this, the team looking to turn it around, the Phillies, are getting a key pitcher back for this game from being injured, and he’s hoping to propel them back into the mix. This game is going to get underway at 7:05pm EST, and the game will be played in Philadelphia, and they are definitely getting a home field advantage in this one.

The Giants are going to be sending Ryan Vogelsong to the mound, who has a 5-7 record and a 3.86 ERA on the year. He’s done very well recently, but simply hasn’t gotten the results that he’s hoped for, thanks to a lack of run support. He’s gotten a loss in each of his last four starts, but has given up an ERA of just 2.92 through that span. The most shocking part is that the team earned a grand total of zero runs during that stretch. The Giants have won six of eight games when playing in Philadelphia, and are 54-44 so far this season.

The Phillies are going to be sending Cliff Lee to the mound tonight, and fans are excited about it as he’s coming back for his first start in two-months. This could unfortunately be his final game in a Phillies’ uniform though, as there are talks of him potentially being traded. Lee has gone 4-4 this season with a 3.18 ERA, but suffered a strained elbow back in May. The Phillies are sitting at the bottom of the NL East, which have led to the trade rumors around Lee, but he’s done excellent against the Giants in his career, going 5-0 through six regular season starts, and he’s posted just a 0.88 ERA.

The Phillies are the favorites here, while the Giants are simply the better team all-around. Philadelphia is sitting with odds of -137 to win this game, and a large part of that is due to the fact that many believe that Lee will charge the team and get them a win. I think this is the case as well, and I’m taking Philadelphia to get the job done.
