MLB Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals- July 9th, 2014

The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to lock up another series victory as they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight. This is just the third game of the four game series though, and while the Cardinals have won two straight, they had lost two in a row before that to the Miami Marlins. The two wins against the Pirates have come from walk-offs, and have both been great games to watch. The Cards won game one by a score of 2-0 thanks to a ninth inning home run, and the second game by a solo home run in the ninth to win 5-4. The Pirates had been playing some strong baseball before that, especially on the road. This game will get underway at 8:15pm EST, and it’ll be on ESPN.

The Pirates have gone a disappointing 0-17 with runners in scoring position in this series so far. Before the last loss, which resulted in them going 2-2 in this series in a best case scenario, they had won five straight road series’, something they hadn’t done in 32 years. The team had also won six of seven and eight of ten before heading to take on their rivals from the NL Central. Tonight they are going to be sending Brandon Cumpton to the mound, who has a 3-2 record with a 4.61 ERA on the year. He is getting the start in place of Gerrit Cole, who has a slight injury. Cumpton is being recalled from Triple-A for this one, and he hasn’t pitched in the majors in around two weeks, as he got a no decision against the Mets on the 27th of June.

The Cardinals on the other side are going to be sending Lance Lynn to the mound, who has a 9-6 record and a 3.17 ERA on the year. He had a tough outing against the Dodgers recently, but rebounded in a big way with nearly seven innings without giving up a run against the Marlins. He’s won three of his previous five starts, but hasn’t won back to back games since the end of May. Throughout his career he’s posted a 4-3 record against the Pirates, and in his last game he gave up four runs in six innings.

Consensus

The edge here is going to the St. Louis Cardinals. I like the way that Lynn has been pitching lately, and I think that he’ll come out with a big game tonight against the Pirates. The Pirates inability to hit with runners in scoring position likely won’t end tonight, and I think we see the Cardinals get an impressive win at the odds of -130.
