MLB Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals- July 8th, 2014

On Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals will host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second game of a four game series. The Cardinals and Pirates are fighting for second place in the National League Central, both trailing the Milwaukee Brewers.

St. Louis will send Carlos Martinez to the mound in this one. The 22 year from the Dominican Republic has won his last two decisions. In his last start, Martinez went 5 innings allowing 5 hits and a run. On the season Martinez has allowed 47 hits in 53 innings. The Cardinals right-hander is making just his sixth career start. Offensively for St. Louis, they are looking for guys like Matt Holliday and Allen Craig to come around. Both guys have struggled all season long, putting the Cardinals in a position where they are one of the worst statistical offensive teams in all of baseball. St. Louis ranks 17th with a .250 batting average, but are the third worst in runs scored with just 328.

For Pittsburgh, they are going to send former Philadelphia starting pitcher Vance Worley to the mound. Worley is 2-1 on the season with a 2.28 earned run average. The 26 year old has made just 4 starts this season, with them all being in the last month. In 27.2 innings, Worley has allowed 21 hits and just 7 runs. In those 7 runs, Worley has allowed 3 homeruns. For the Pirates offense, their on base percentage is .334, which is tops in all of Major League Baseball. The top offensive threat for the Pirates is Andrew McCutchen. The centerfielder is putting up another MVP type season with a .324 batting average 13 homeruns and drove in 54. The Pirates have been outscored 363-362 on the season thus far.

While both of these teams are looking for a win to get back into the swing of things within the National League Central, we like the home team to win this game. Carlos Martinez is pitching a bit better as of late, while we feel the Worley will have a tough time keeping the St. Louis offense at bay. We are going to bet the favorite in this one as well. Our bet is going to be the St. Louis Cardinals -126.
