MLB Betting Preview: Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs- May 16th, 2014

The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs may have started their seasons on the complete opposite side of the spectrum, but that doesn’t mean that these two teams aren’t motivated to make some noise. The Brewers are actually sitting at the top of the division currently, and they are looking to prove that this is no fluke. They’ve put together a nice start at 26-15, but as of late they’ve struggled a bit to get things going. The Cubs on the other side are what many consider to be as rebuilding, but they want to win, and they want to win now. This is an early start for this game, as it starts at 2:20pm EST.

The Brewers have that strong starting record to this point, but they’ve gone just 5-5 in their last ten games, and they’ve definitely had their own issues. The bad news for the Brewers right now is that they are going to be without Carlos Gomez, who was suspended, and Aramis Ramirez is on the disabled list. That’s definitely affected their issues with hitting the ball as of late. They’ve had a tough time getting runs, and now they get a tough match-up against a great pitcher. The good news is that Ryan Braun has been excellent against the Cubs in his career, so that’ll be big to watch.

For the Cubs, they get Jeff Samardzija heading to the mound, and while he’s gone 0-3 this season, he’s posted a brilliant 1.45 ERA throughout this season. Hitting has just been the major issue for the Cubs this season, and that’s why they are sitting with a 13-26 record. They’ve lost two games in a row, but even worse is the fact that they’ve gone 2-8 in their last ten games. The hitting really needs to get going for the Cubs, and an opening game of a series against the leader in the division may be what they’ll need.

Consensus

Interestingly, the Cubs are favored in this game as -109 favorites. They aren’t big favorites by any means, but the reason for this is obviously because Samardzija is on the mound for Chicago. I believe that the Cubs are going to show up here in terms of their hitting, as this is a great spot for them to really get going in front of their home fans. The Cubs are betting favorites currently on the sportsbooks, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see those odds move around a bit before the game starts.
