MLB Betting Preview: Milwaukee Brewers vs. Atlanta Braves- May 19th, 2014

The Atlanta Braves recently changed up their lineup to try to get out of a brutal slump where they were 29th in the majors with just 3.15 runs per game, and were averaging just 2.28 since April 29th. The change apparently worked, as things finally got going with a big win in their last game, and now they are set to start out a nine game home stand against the tough Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers have been strong this season, but are struggling offensively on the road, which could be an issue since the Braves have won four straight on their home field. This game starts at 7:10pm EST on Monday night.

The Brewers have some major road concerns right now, as they have lost seven of their last nine road games. They actually won 11 of 12 road games originally, but in their last eight they’ve been able to manage just 19 runs while posting that 2-6 record. The reason for their losses hasn’t been Wily Peralta though, as he’s gone 4-2 this season with a 2.05 ERA and gave up two runs or fewer in seven of his eight starts. Peralta is hoping to get some help in this one, and he’s had success against the Braves, giving up just one run over 13 innings in two starts.

The Braves have a pitcher going in Mike Minor who just recently had his best start since coming back from injury. Minor has a record of 1-2 with a 4.24 ERA this season, and while he missed the first month of the season with a sore shoulder, he had not won in eight games before giving up just three hits in 6 2/3 innings in what turned into a 5-0 win against the San Francisco Giants. The good news for the Braves is that Minor has done well against the Brewers since 2012, posting a 1.35 ERA in three starts.

Very interesting game here, and the Braves are getting the edge in terms of being the betting favorite, with odds of -120. While I do think that the Braves get the edge based on their home field advantage, I think that the Brewers having Peralta is going to be a big edge. If they need someone to step up and end this streak on the road, then it’ll be him. I see it being close, but I’ll take the team with the better odds here, and I’m betting on the Brewers with odds of +111.
