MLB Betting Preview: Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Washington Nationals- May 5th, 2014

It’s been an interesting start to the 2014 MLB season, as every team currently has 10+ losses, and there hasn’t been any specific team who jumps off the page as a “must bet” to contend for the MLB title. While the Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s have all looked strong, it’s looking like this season could go any direction, and two of the teams who are definitely in the mix for intriguing bets include the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Nationals. The Dodgers and Nats both have a ton of talent, and we’ve seen them both win and lose some close ones so far this season.

The Dodgers come into this game with an 18-14 record, and are on the road against the Nationals here. What’s interesting though, is that they’ve been a very, very good road team, going 12-5 so far this season. This is a night game, and they’ve been 12-10 this year when playing at night. In the last ten games, the team has gone just 5-5, so nothing really jumps off the page outside of that road record. One big thing they do have going for them is that Zack Greinke is starting, and he’s 5-0 with a 2.04 ERA this season.

The Nationals on the other side are 17-14 this season, but are just 9-8 on their home field, showing that home field may not be huge in this game. They’ve put up an 11-9 record in night games, and are 6-4 in their last ten. Basically, the Nationals and Dodgers are playing similar types of baseball recently, making this game all the more interesting. The Nats are sending Jordan Zimmerman, who has gone 2-1 this season with a 3.27 ERA, but there’s been some close games that the team just hasn’t pulled out.

Pitching Duel

Both of these pitchers have looked strong this year, and I think that we see them going at it back and forth while trying to get a big win. There is talent on both sides here hitting the ball as well though, so both Greinke and Zimmerman’s job won’t be easy.

Consensus

Tough game to call, but Greinke is just playing lights out right now. It’s tough to look past his game right now, and pairing that with the fact that the Dodgers have shown ability to win games away from home makes this an even better spot for Los Angeles. Should be a fun game to watch, but I’m taking the Dodgers at the betting odds of -110.
