MLB Betting Preview: Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates- July 23rd, 2014

The final game of this interesting series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates is set to get underway on Wednesday night, and the middle game of the series saw some serious runs get put on the board. The Pirates and Dodgers combined for five total home runs, and the Pirates went on to win the game by a score of 12-7 to even up the series and make the final game even more interesting.  This game gets underway tonight at 7:05pm EST, and the series is being played in Pittsburgh, where the Pirates have already given up 40 home runs in total this season.

For the pitching match-ups, the Dodgers are going to send Dan Haren to the mound, who has had an 8-7 record with a 4.30 ERA on the year. He’s struggled in July though, as he’s had an ERA of 9.64 this month so far, and each game that he’s played in (three of them) have resulted in losses. In the last two games he hasn’t made it out of the fifth inning, as he allowed three runs in 4 2/3 on Friday. He’s been mediocre against the Pirates in his career through nine starts, going 3-2 with a 4.92 ERA.

The Pirates on the other side are going to be sending Francisco Liriano to the mound, who has a 1-7 record and a 4.43 ERA. Liriano just can’t catch a break it seems this season, and he hasn’t been able to get a win since May 30th. He did spend a month on the disabled list though, so he only had four starts since that point. Coming back from the DL he struggled, but was better in his last game, giving up just one unearned run and three hits through five innings. He’s been very good recently against the Dodgers as well, winning two games and allowing two runs through 12 innings.

This is a tough game to call, as the Dodgers may be without two key players again in Yasiel Puig and Hanley Ramirez. They also have a pitcher in Haren who has been struggling, but Liriano for the Pirates hasn’t had much going his way either as of late. The Pirates are favorites thought at -139, and I think that they grab this series win thanks to a strong performance again from Liriano, who is starting to get things going in the right direction. They aren’t the best odds, but the Pirates will clinch this home series and score some runs while doing so.
