MLB Betting Preview: Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates- July 22nd, 2014

Dating back to 2001, the Los Angeles Dodgers have simply had the Pittsburgh Pirates’ number. They’ve gone 70-29 since that year, and when these two teams have met at PNC Park, the Dodgers have gone 30-15, so all-in-all it’s really been the Dodgers owning this series. We are heading into game two of the three game series tonight though, and the Pirates are looking to turn it around after losing game one by a score of 5-2. The Pirates got a total of six hits in game one, and if they want to beat the Dodgers they are going to need to get the bats going. This game will get underway at 7:05pm EST, and the series is played in Pittsburgh, as previously mentioned.

For the Dodgers, they are sending a man who has spent the bulk of this month on the disabled list with some lingering hip discomfort in Josh Beckett. Beckett has been solid this year with an ERA of just 2.26. In total though, he’s posted just a record of 6-5, and before his injury he was pitching very well. His most recent start on July 6th saw him throw five scoreless innings and give up only three hits in that game. Through his previous nine starts he had an ERA of only 1.74, and even threw a no hitter on May 25th. Beckett is hoping that in his return from his injury that he’ll be able to keep things going the right direction and can lead the Dodgers to a win.

The Pirates on the other side are just trying to figure out their issues against the Dodgers at home. They are a very good home team though, posting a 32-21 record this season, but they need to figure out the Dodgers tonight. They are sending Vance Worley to the mound, who actually hasn’t made a start since the start of this month, and recently he’s only threw two innings of relief before the All-Star break. Worley has a record of 2-1 and a 3.38 ERA on the year, but he hasn’t faced the Dodgers since back in 2012. His previous two actual starts were strong ones though, as he went seven innings and in total gave up 11 hits and four runs.

Tough game to call, but I think that the Dodgers are going to be able to keep the Pirates’ number in this game. It’s going to be a close one and a fun one to watch, but with odds of +109, I’m going with Beckett and the Dodgers. Expect Beckett to have a strong showing tonight.
