MLB Betting Preview: Detroit Tigers vs. Los Angeles Angels- July 26th, 2014

The Los Angeles Angels are in a major push to try to grab first place in the American League West, and they need to keep the winning going tonight against the Detroit Tigers. This is the third game of their four game series, and the Angels dropped three games back of the A’s by losing the series opener, but after winning 2-1 on Friday, they got back within two games.  The Angels have simply had the Tigers’ number dating back to 201, as they’ve gone 41-16 against Detroit. The Tigers had only six hits in that game, and they’ve lost six of 10 games now. The Tigers are still sitting with a very nice record, thanks to being an incredibly strong road team with a record of 31-18 away from their home ballpark. This game gets underway tonight at 9:05pm EST.

The Tigers are going to be sending Justin Verlander tonight, and they are hoping that he can be the man to get them out of this slump that they are in. Verlander has just a 9-8 record this season with a 4.84 ERA on the year though. He has won three of four starts, and in his most recent game he gave up three runs and six hits against the Diamondbacks. In 11 of his last 13 starts he’s given up at least three runs, and in a shocking stat, he hasn’t allowed under two runs all season. Things aren’t looking good for him either, as he hasn’t been very good against the Angels in his career, posting a 4-5 record with a 4.08 ERA.

For the Angels, it’ll be Matt Shoemaker taking the mound, and he lost his last game after winning two in a row before that. He gave up four runs and five hits against the Orioles, but still had 10 strikeouts in that game. Shoemaker has been strong at home this season though, posting a 4-2 record, but what makes this interesting is that he has never faced the Tigers in his career to this point, so no one knows what to expect here. Overall this year, Shoemaker has a 7-3 record with a 4.54 ERA.

The Tigers have been great at home, and I think Verlander puts up a solid pitching performance tonight, and they get the win. The Tigers are currently sitting with odds of +107, and that’ll be the side that I’m taking, with the expectation that they can get back to their road-winning ways tonight against Los Angeles.
