MLB Betting Preview: Cincinnati Reds vs. Pittsburgh Pirates- June 18th, 2014

The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates are in the midst of their series, and there are definitely a few story lines to watch during this one. These are two teams who are both fighting to get over the .500 mark, as the Reds are 34-35, and the Pirates are 34-36. A key part of this game will be the Pirates’ bullpen, as they’ve been dominated in the last four games, although they’ve gone 2-2. We’ve seen this bullpen post an ERA of 9.95, and they’ve given up at least three runs in each game. This game is set to get underway at 7:05pm EST, and the series is being played in Pittsburgh.

For the Reds, they had to make a change at the start of the season since Mat Latos was unable to go. The team turned to Alfredo Simon, and he has turned into quite the pleasant surprise. Simon is attempting to become the first National League pitcher to hit 10 wins, and he won’t be going back into the bullpen, as he’s posted a 9-3 record with a 2.95 ERA this season. He’s tied with Adam Wainwright and Zack Greinke currently at the top of the NL for wins, and he’s been great on the road with a 6-1 record, where he’ll be at today of course. Simon

On the other side of things, the Pirates are sending Edinson Volquez to the mound, who has a 4-5 record with a 3.89 ERA this season. He’s pitched very well as of late though, and he’s won three of his last four games specifically. He had a brilliant game against the Chicago Cubs in his last one, as he gave up seven hits in seven innings while earning a 4-0 victory. Volquez was a All-Star in 2008, and he also pitched for the Reds from 2008 to 2011. He’s faced his old team four times in his career, going 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA. His most recent game was a loss in which he gave up just two runs through seven innings.

Interesting game here, but I think the edge has to go to the Reds, especially since Simon has just been excellent on the road. He’s been great all around, and I think that he’ll make the difference in the end. If you want to bet on the Pirates the odds are currently -117, while the Reds are underdogs at +108. I like getting odds here with the Reds, who definitely have the better pitcher heading to the mound tonight.
