MLB Betting Preview: Boston Red Sox vs. Oakland Athletics- June 19th, 2014

The Boston Red Sox are getting a 10 game road trip underway starting tonight, and it’s not going to be an easy starts as they are up against the strongest pitching staff in the American League. The worst part of all right now for the Red Sox is that they not only have to face the team with the best record in the American League, but they ware also in the midst of a tough offensive slump as well. They did have back to back homers in their last game, but have gone five straight without scoring more than two runs. It was a brutal spot last game as they had only one hit through nine innings before seeing a home run from David Ortiz and then one from Mike Napoli in the 10th inning. The A’s are a completely different beast though, and enter this game with a 44-28 record. This game is set to get underway at 10:05pm EST tonight.

The Red Sox are in a serious funk, but they are hoping that they can use those two home runs to get their offense going for this road trip. They are sending Jake Peavy to the mound, but Peavy has struggled this year going just 1-4 with a 4.53 ERA, and they’ll need him to have a strong showing against this tough A’s team. Peavy had given up at least three runs in six straight starts before his last game on Saturday against the Indians. In his career he’s only faced the A’s twice, going 1-0 allowing three runs in 15 innings.

For the Athletics, they’ve won four of their last five games, and are averaging 7.4 runs per game in their last five. They’ve been the exact opposite of the Red Sox, and they’re sending Scott Kazmir to the mound in this one, who has gone 8-2 with a 2.05 ERA on the year. Kazmir hasn’t allowed a run in either of his last two starts, and has gone 3-0 with an impressive 0.95 ERA in his last four games.

The Athletics may be pretty big favorites here at -157, but it’s for good reason. They’ve got the stronger pitcher going, they’ve been playing better baseball, and at times their offense has simply looked almost too tough to stop. I think that they are going to come out and get things rolling once again to grab another nice win. The Red Sox offense won’t be enough, and I’m taking the A’s here.
