Basketball Betting — Suns Favored Over Banged-Up Hawks in Sunday Meeting

As BetDSI customers have seen, the Phoenix Suns have experienced some ups and downs this season, and fortunately for them, things have mostly been looking “up.” On Sunday night they will play host to the Atlanta Hawks, a club that is “hurtin’ for certain,” in basketball betting action that is set to get underway at 8:05 PM ET at the US Airways Center.

Both of these teams are currently in eighth place in their respective conferences, although there is a big disparity in the way they have performed on the court. The Hawks have a record of 26-31 straight-up, and they are actually in a rather comfortable spot as far as their playoff security is concerned, as they are 3.5 games ahead of the Detroit Pistons. Atlanta is 27-29-1 against the NBA pointspread.

Phoenix, another eighth-place team, is trying to beat back the challenge of the Memphis Grizzlies, who trail them by just a game and a half. The Suns are 34-24 straight-up, which would put them firmly in third position in the East. They also sport the league’s best record against the pointspread, as they are 37-20-1 versus the number.

In the basketball betting odds that have been posted by BetDSI on this game, the Suns are solid favorites:

Phoenix Suns -8
Atlanta Hawks +8

Over 217 points -110
Under 217 points -110

To give you a little perspective, the Denver Nuggets, who are having an awful time of it right now, would be just a game behind Atlanta and putting pressure on them in the East. That is the difference between the two conferences. So the Hawks are lucky in that they have such horrible competition in the East.

Of course, as NBA bettors know, they have NOT been lucky when it comes to injuries. Earlier in the season, Al Horford was lost for the duration with a shoulder injury, and that was a crushing blow because he was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder. Paul Millsap filled that vacuum from the power forward spot, but he is expected to miss this particular game with a knee injury. Pero Antic, one of Horford’s backups, was already out with an ankle problem.

As you can imagine, all of this has had a deleterious effect on the Hawks’ fortunes, as they have lost ten of their last eleven games straight-up, while putting their basketball betting supporters through a living hell with a 1-9-1 pointspread run. As bad as Detroit and New York are, if they put together any kind of winning streak, they will start to apply the heat on the Hawks, who are +295 underdogs on the money line tonight at BetDSI.

The Suns had some issues as well, as they had lost three games in a row, including a game where guard Goran Dragic had to sit out with an ankle injury. Because of the super-competitive nature of the West, Phoenix’s position was considered tenuous. But this has been a resilient bunch, which is why they have come out of nowhere to be a playoff contender, and Dragic came roaring back to show NBA bettors that he is at or near the top of his game. Dragic had a career-high 40 points against New Orleans on Friday, making 14 of his 21 shots from the field, and handed out five assists for good measure. So all indications are that the Suns’ offense is in pretty good hands once again.

The defense may be a different story. The Suns have permitted their last four opponents to shoot a combined 52.7%, so perhaps the “over” (which has been the result in Atlanta’s last six games) is well worth a look.
